If you are seeking recovery from substance use and 12-step meetings aren’t a fit for you, consider SMART Recovery at Little House in Tsawwassen.

SMART Recovery is an abstinence-based, not-for-profit organization with a sensible self-help program for people having problems with drinking and using.

It includes many ideas and techniques to help you change your life from one that is self-destructive and unhappy to one that is constructive and satisfying. SMART Recovery is not a spin-off of Alcoholics Anonymous.  No one will label you an “alcoholic”, an “addict” or “diseased” nor “powerless”, and if you do not believe in a religion or spirituality, that’s fine, too. SMART Recovery teaches common sense self-help procedures designed to empower you to abstain and to develop a more positive lifestyle.

When you succeed at following the SMART Recovery approach, you may graduate from the program, or you may stay around to help others.

The SMART community of recovery also works online. The SMART Recovery website includes a ‘social networking’ system to help SMART participants build up their contacts with others using SMART Recovery in their local area and across the country. For some, this will be about sharing ideas, videos and articles that have helped them, for others it will be about organizing local events or giving feedback to help improve how SMART Recovery works.

A SMART Recovery meeting is held at Little House every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Attendance is free.
