The province is planning a series of roadworks aimed at improving travel times and reliability through Delta while also improving traffic safety for goods movers and the travelling public.

While nothing is currently happening on the Highway 99/Massey Tunnel corridor, the province is planning for big highway works elsewhere in Delta.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Highway 91/17 and Deltaport Way Upgrade Project includes an array of new interchange highway construction.

Delta engineering director Steven Lan recently told council it’s “a very major project” and the province is early in a lengthy process, which includes consultation with engineering Delta staff.

Noting traffic management and keeping vehicles moving during construction will be a key component, Lan said the project is expected to be done in 2023. Site investigation and preload could begin this summer.

The project has an anticipated cost of approximately $245 million with joint funding from the province, the feds, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Tsawwassen First Nation.

Highway 91/17 Upgrade Project:

Highway 91 at Nordel Interchange - upgraded ramps to and from Delta, improved acceleration and deceleration lanes and additional through-lanes for Nordel Way traffic crossing over Highway 91.

Highway 91 Connector at Nordel Way intersection upgrades - combination of direct access roads and additional turning lanes to remove one signal light and improve all movements, including significantly improved access to and from the Nordel Way commercial vehicle inspection station and truck parking area.

A new interchange at Highway 17 and Highway 91 Connector (Sunbury) and improvements to the River Road connection - replacing the existing signalized intersection and eliminating the need for an at-grade rail crossing to access the highway.

Intersection improvements at Highway 17 at 80th Street (Tilbury) - upgrading the connection from 80th Street to Highway 17 westbound, to improve merging and reduce queuing on 80th Street.

Deltaport Way at 27B Avenue On-Ramp Improvements

27B Avenue to Deltaport Way access improvements - providing a smoother, safer merge for westbound traffic.

27B Avenue Improvements Project

27B Avenue upgrades between Deltaport Way and 41B Street - roadway widening and upgrading in cooperation with Tsawwassen First Nation, to improve access to industrial lands and the Canadian Border Service Agency’s container examination facility.
