More youth will be able to get free admission into Delta’s recreation facilities.

Delta council this week approved a recommendation by the parks and recreation department to expand free admissions to include those ages 10 to 18 or those in grades 5 through 12.

Delta currently offers a complimentary admission pass to students in grades 5 to 8, a program that was introduced in 2005. It requires students to enroll annually at the start of each school year.

A report to council notes that over 300,000 visits to recreation facilities have taken place to date under the program and it has led to a significant increase to the number of youth visits to recreation centres.

“By expanding the program to include an age range of 10 to 18 and grade range from 5 through 12, the broadest possible range of youth can enjoy the Youth Admission Pass while spreading out the ability to register throughout the year,” the report explains.

Eligible Delta residents will be able to visit a customer service office at any recreation facility and present proof of their birth date and residency in order to receive their pass. Those that do not meet the age range but are in grades 5 through 12 will be required to provide proof of their school placement.

The city will also add supervisory staff during evening and weekend periods in anticipation of increased attendance.
