Work is taking place to transform the old Delta Town & Country Inn site into a new casino/ hotel complex but it’s not clear when residents will be playing the slots there.

Asked for a construction update, and whether Cascades Casino Delta will be open in late 2020 as originally planned, a Gateway spokesperson said construction started well and crews are continue to work on the extensive land preparation so construction of the building can begin early next year.

“As you can appreciate, this is a large and complex project but we are pleased with the progress we have been making in the early stages. We will have many exciting updates for the public over the coming months as we begin to raise the new Cascades Casino from the ground,” the company stated.

Delta council gave final approval for the $70-million complex in the summer of 2018 but it took several months for the provincial Ministry of Highways to sign off on the project.

The old hotel that had been at the junction of highways 17A and 99 for a half-century was torn down this spring.

The new project includes a five-storey, 116-room hotel and meeting space. The casino will have up to 500 slots and 24 gaming tables, as well as a Match Eatery and Public House, Atlas Steak + Fish and a buffet.

There won't be a sportsbook or theatre but Gateway notes the complex will have space for live entertainment.

The number of slots is to be smaller than casinos like the River Rock and Starlight, but more than some of the smaller gambling venues around the region.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation estimates annual revenue coming to Delta would be at the top end of its initial $1.5 million to $3 million projection.
