A Delta police officer remains in hospital along with a female victim following an alleged stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon outside Immaculate Conception, a private school in North Delta.

On Thursday morning, DPD Chief Neil Dubord provided an update on the case.

“The DPD would like to thank everyone who has reached out regarding our officer and the woman involved in the altercation at Immaculate Conception yesterday,” said Dubord on his Twitter feed. “The officer’s condition has been upgraded to stable. The woman involved still remains in serious condition.”

Police will be holding a media briefing Thursday afternoon where Dubord is expected to provide details on the initial police response, and an update on the investigation.

According to police, the incident occurred just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

“An off-duty Delta police officer was at Immaculate Conception and witnessed an assault occurring between a man and a woman in front of the school,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “He intervened, and during the altercation the woman and the officer were stabbed.”

A suspect was arrested at the scene and is in police custody.

She said no children were involved in the incident.

The school was locked down for a period of time while police investigated and to ensure the safety of staff, students and parents, who were arriving to pick up their children.

One of those parents, Ron Calliou, told the Optimist that he was on his way into the school to pick up his daughter when he saw the incident unfold.

“The entire incident happened as I was walking in,” Calliou said. “I saw a gentleman being handcuffed. It looked like there was one to two people on the ground, but I don't know what their status is. When I walked in, we were told that everyone had to get inside. That's when I thought there are probably parents that didn't know what was going on, so I posted a few pictures on my Twitter feed and let them know what I knew.”

Calliou said he noticed quite a bit of blood on the gentleman who was handcuffed.

“I don't know whether that was his blood or someone else's,” he said. “All the children that were still in the school were all accounted for and were all safe.”
