Potential provincial action on East Ladner stink

Delta South MLA says government indicated commitment

Green for Life Environmental is hosting a public meeting next Tuesday to discuss plans for its Enviro-Smart composting facility in East Ladner.

Delta South MLA Ian Paton says he’s had positive discussions with a pair of provincial cabinet ministers over the Enviro Smart issue.

In a news release today, Paton noted he met with Environment Minister George Heyman this past week.

“The minister did commit to some action items, which was promising,” said Paton.

“I sensed a desire on his part to help address the situation by working with the company’s operators to navigate the permitting process for enclosing the facility. Any action his ministry can take to help Green for Life (GFL) Environmental work through this complicated process would be very helpful.”

Paton said Heyman is also exploring the possibility of sending an Environment Ministry representative to next week’s community meeting on the issue.

Paton also noted he recently met with Agriculture Minister Lana Popham as well, to reiterate the concerns of the East Ladner community.

“These odours are having a negative effect on residents’ well-being and really disrupting their lives. I’m hopeful these recent meetings in addition to public forums, letters and other efforts I’ve made to raise awareness of this issue will lead to solutions that fully address the needs of our community,” Paton stated.

Paton is encouraging residents to attend the upcoming public meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn.
