The City of Delta is advising that even though the George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary remains open, people won’t be able to drive to the site during Westham Island Bridge rehabilitation closures.

A news release notes that until March 31 the historic bridge will require several daytime closures that could last up to eight hours. During these times, while the bird sanctuary will be open to the public, visitors might not be able to access or leave the island.

During the closures, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be permitted to cross the bridge with the assistance of an escort.

Work involves repairing and replacing components across the entire bridge, including piles and pile caps, floor beams and stringers below the deck, deck and handrail, and the swing mechanism. One of TransLink’s oldest assets, the 108-year-old bridge requires regular repairs and maintenance to ensure it remains operational and safe.
