Delta Police are warning about an email scam targeting some Delta residents.

In this ‘sexploitation’ scam, victims receive an email claiming a criminal has their password (which is a correct current or older password.) The email claims that a pornography site the victim visited has been compromised by malware. The malware allegedly allows the criminal to access the victim’s webcam while on that site, and record their actions. The criminal threatens to send the video to the victims’ contacts (email and social media) if the victim does not send them money via Bitcoin.

“This is a scam. There has been a mass password theft recently, and your passwords were likely compromised in that theft,” said DPD in a post on their Facebook page. “Even if you or your family has visited a porn site recently, do not panic.”

If you encounter a sexploitation scam like this, Delta police recommend that you:

• Do not pay
• Change your password
• Do not use the same password for all of your accounts/devices
• Do a factory reset on your phone
