South Delta Crime Beat: Floor mats likely to blame as truck crashes into Ladner business

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

Nov. 9, 10:30 p.m., Beach Grove: Police were called to a report that someone had their vehicle broken into. The vehicle’s right passenger side window was broken and a purse was taken from within the vehicle. The total value of damages was $290.

Nov. 10, 4:30 a.m., 5600-block of 16th Avenue: Police were called to reports of a break and enter that had occurred at someone’s home. The home owner advised police they heard a loud crash at approximately 4:30 a.m. and a vehicle drive away. The homeowner then discovered their garage had been smashed in and the garage door had fallen onto their car inside the garage. Two high-end bikes were missing. Police advised the homeowner to practice crime prevention through environmental design by cutting down bushes and installing more lights and cameras.

Nov. 10, 3:30 a.m., Beach Grove: Police were called to a vehicle that was broken into. The vehicle’s right passenger side window was broken into and a purse was stolen. The contents of the purse included credit cards, a driver’s licence and cash. The file is still ongoing and police believe this theft may be linked to other theft from autos that are occurring in the area.

Nov. 10, 11:28 a.m., 5300-block of Silverado Place: Police were called to a report of vehicle that had its passenger side window smashed in. Various items were taken from the vehicle including an IPhone, work vest and running shoes with a total value of $300.

Nov. 17, 1:24 a.m., 1200-block of 53A Street: Police stopped a vehicle and determined the driver was slurring his words. He admitted to consuming a beer at the pub. The driver provided two breath samples both of which failed. The driver was served an immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed. The driver left the scene on foot.  

Ladner

Nov. 10, 6:06 p.m., 4400-block of Maple Lane: Police were called to reports of a driver intoxicated by marijuana. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. A field sobriety test was conducted and the driver performed poorly. The driver’s licence was seized and the registered owner of the vehicle attended the scene to pick up their vehicle.  

Nov. 10, 11 p.m., 4900-block of 56th Street: Police were called to a report of a theft of a vehicle from in front of the owner’s home. The vehicle was stolen sometime overnight. No broken glass was left at the scene.
Nov. 11, 11:40 a.m., 2200-block of Highway 17: Police witnessed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed estimated to be going 149 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was issued an excessive speed violation ticket. The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver left the scene via taxi.  

Nov. 14, 3:07 p.m., 4800-block of Elliott Street: Police were called to a scene where a truck had driven into the front of a business. The driver advised police he was not sure what had happened and that the gas pedal had got stuck and the vehicle started to rev causing it to jump the curb into the front doors of the business. There was no damage to the vehicle but approximately $15,000 in damage to the business. Police advised the driver to change his floor mats as they are the wrong size and it seems they bunched up near the gas pedal. The driver was also advised to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle to ensure no other issues arise. No injuries took place during the incident.

Nov. 16, 9:54 p.m., 7100-block of Vantage Way: Ladner Community Crime Watch volunteers were conducting regular patrols when they discovered a stolen vehicle. Police arrived on scene to confirm the vehicle was stolen out of Burnaby. There was damage to the passenger side rear window and to the dash. The vehicle was towed for further investigation.
