Students can get creative in poster contest

Delta Firefighters Association sponsoring contest to support school district Food Security program
Poster contest
The Delta Firefighters Association has launched a student community poster contest to help support the Delta School District Food Security Program.

The Delta Firefighters Association are looking for local students to get creative with their artisic talents to help out the school district’s food security program.

Delta Firefighters are encouraging students to create artwork that highlights the people they are thankful for from across many different industries who are working hard to help others during these challenging times.

Delta Firefighters will make a $10 donation to the school district’s Food Security Program for every submission received. In addition, the contest winners will receive a $100 gift card to a local business of their choice and have their artwork displayed throughout the City of Delta. Based on their age, students have a choice of colouring in posters, sending in a written submission or creating their own thank you poster.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to connect with the community and the Delta School District by recognizing essential workers while giving to those in need. We believe our community is what we make of it,” said Mike McMillan, president of Delta Firefighters Association. “It is our hope, through this community-based initiative, that by providing students the opportunity to raise money through their work, they will recognize that they are making a difference in their community and will find ways to give back in the future. The Delta School District Food Security Program is a special reminder of how close-knit the City of Delta truly is.”

Delta School District superintendent Doug Sheppard said the Food Security Program currently supports 175 families each week.

“Our firefighters continue to bring hope and connection to Delta,” he said. “As pillars of our community, they continue to connect those who are able to support those in need. They are important role models and we are extremely grateful for their efforts to encourage students to help people in need in Delta with this initiative.”

Mayor George Harvie said this is just another example of Delta firefighters going above and beyond to support Delta families in need.

“I’m grateful to Delta Firefighters and the Delta School District for partnering together to deliver this amazing local initiative, raising funds for Delta School District’s tremendous Food Security Program,” added Harvie.
