Thanks to quick action from members of the public and Delta police, four people are in custody on suspicion of trying to steal copper from Telus lines in Delta.

Resident Ross Morrison contacted the Optimist on Tuesday about the suspected theft.

“It happened again - someone overnight cut down some utility poles and tried to steal the overhead wires (copper),” said Morrison in his email. “This happened along the dyke (Millennium Trail) to the north of 6263 River Road. Residents were alerted to a heavy police presence in the early morning of Tuesday, but this time the perpetrators were caught.”

Telus spokesperson Liz Sauvé said thanks to the quick action of police and residents, there was no service disruption to customers.

“Thieves attempted to damage one of our cables in Delta in the early morning hours of Tuesday, but thanks to our security efforts, awareness from the public, and partnership with the police, the suspects were immediately apprehended,” she said.

Delta police are investigating and four individuals were arrested on suspicion of being involved in wire theft, said public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.
