The West Shore Laylum care home in Ladner could be redeveloped into a larger facility.

An application has been submitted to the city by West Shore Laylum Management Ltd., a privately held company in Delta, to construct a new community care facility at 4900 Central Ave. to replace the existing building. The number of beds would increase from 55 to 74 and the new building would be taller, from two storeys to three.

According to the planning department, the zoning for the site permits a three-storey building. The proposed building would be set back 5.4 metres (18 feet) from the property line whereas the current building is set back approximately 27 metres (89 feet). The proposed setbacks meet the minimum requirements of the zone.

Existing on-site trees on the lot line are proposed to be replaced with new landscaping.

Delta council, which will be getting a report from staff on the application in the next few weeks, already received a letter of opposition from one neighbor who stated they are concerned about losing their privacy and sunlight.
