Bishop and her Team Delta say the 2018 elections represent in many ways a fresh start for the local government.

Sylvia Bishop continues to be busy on her campaign trail making announcements.

Running for mayor, the two-term city councillor on Wednesday made a pair of announcements, the first outlining her new campaign phrase “New Leadership, New Ideas” which she says accurately describes the focus of her campaign.

The second is a business-outreach initiative which will feature a series of 13 early-morning meals in five distinct business areas in Delta – Annacis Island, Ladner, North Delta, Tilbury Island and Tsawwassen – between Aug. 20 and Oct 10. She said she’s eager to strengthen a positive, two-way dialogue between the municipal administration and private-sector.

Speaking with the Optimist at the Ladner Community Centre, Bishop said the municipal election ballot could have a lengthy list of names hoping to make it onto council with several vacant seats up for grabs.

“In my experience, I think anyone who wanted to run would have declared by now, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t people out there who will file before the deadline. What’s different for me, this time, is that everybody who wants to run seems to be on a slate. There’s only one (Darcy Green) independent running,” she said.

Bishop was the first to announce her candidacy for mayor this year, heading the Team Delta slate with fellow councillor Robert Campbell and newcomers Joan Hansen, Kim Kendall and Simran Walia.

Former city manager George Harvie is also running for mayor. He’s leading his Achieving for Delta slate of newcomers Dan Copeland, Param Grewal, Alicia Guichon, Dylan Kruger and Cal Traversy. Harvie has been busy door knocking and talking about his campaign on social media.

Former police chief Jim Cessford is also running for mayor, part of the Independents Working for You ticket that includes incumbent councillors Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos as well as newcomers Sandeep Pandher and Garry Shearer. Also part of the ticket is school board chair Laura Dixon and Jeannie’s husband Nick Kanakos, also an incumbent trustee, both intending to run once again for the board of education.  Also running on the ticket for school board is Joe Muego, the Delta District Parent Advisory Council chair.
