The third annual Delta Pride Picnic won’t be held this summer, but the Delta Pride Society continues its advocacy efforts.

The group received society status last year and that summer it was pleased to host the second Delta Pride Picnic at Memorial Park in Ladner.

“We are thankful for the engagement of the community who came to share and celebrate in this event, the City of Delta, our amazing speakers, and so many groups who hosted tents and activity areas and especially our volunteers,” says society president John Darras. “Unfortunately with COVID we are unable to host a 2020 picnic, but we are still here with plans for more events once we are able.”

Darras says the Delta Pride Society advocates for LGBTQAI2S+ communities through an intersectional lens to promote self-awareness, visibility and diversity.

“We strive to strengthen the sense of community and contribute to the vibrancy, health and overall wellbeing of all persons in the community,” he says. “We respect both the dignity of individuals and the rights of all members regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, cultural or ethnic background, colour, age, physical or mental ability, socio-economic status, political or social affiliation or beliefs. In doing so we seek to identify and remove barriers to full participation in our community.”
