The final cruise ship in the 2017 season departed from Vancouver a couple of weeks ago, marking the end of the 31st consecutive cruise season at Canada Place terminal at the Port of Vancouver. Will we be saying the same thing about cruise ships leaving Roberts Bank in a few years? The port notes that in 2017 Vancouver welcomed almost 843,000 cruise passengers on 236 vessel visits, reflecting a two per cent increase in passenger volumes over 2016. The port also notes cruise is a critical economic driver for the region. Each cruise ship brings an average of $3 million to the local economy. A pre-feasibility study has begun looking at adding a new cruise ship terminal either in Delta or Richmond. The port stressed it’s very early in the process, which may even end up with a decision not to add the second terminal. However, the port has also been saying cruise lines are building bigger ships which Canada Place won’t be able to accommodate. This summer, a top official with Cruise Lines International Association told the media that Vancouver is behind other cities, such as Seattle, that are investing heavily in their port infrastructure. The Vancouver port shut down Ballantyne Pier to cruise ships in 2014, leaving Canada Place as the city’s only cruise terminal.
