Calling them two of the best mayors to sit in Delta, Mayor George Harvie recently recognized a pair of young leaders as winners of the inaugural Mayor for a Day contest.

At the Sept. 16 Delta council meeting, Harvie presented gifts and tokens of recognition to Gabriel Astaforoff and Olivia Gilmore, who were chosen as this year’s winners.

The contest, held in May, invited Delta students from grades 5 to 7 to write to the city telling why they wanted to be mayor.

Harvie said Delta received a number of wonderful submissions.

During their day as mayor, the students joined Harvie on visits throughout the community, including presentations to the North Delta Huskies for winning the boys basketball provincial championships, the opening of a new dog agility park at the Delta Community Animal Shelter and a stop at the new fire hall and training operations centre at Boundary Bay Airport.

“Gabe and Olivia, I really hope you enjoyed the day with me and my great staff,” said Harvie. “You took your job as mayor seriously and you are both great ambassadors for the City of Delta.”
