It doesn't sound so bad, does it? The words "blanketing interference" are rather innocuous but here's a sampling of what Ferndale residents experienced due to 50,000 watts coming from KRPI AM radio towers antennas:
• A constant hum 24 hours a day.
• Static sounds on radio stations.
• Unwanted radio tower music over stereo systems.
• Getting shocks.
• Hearing unwanted radio tower programming over the baby monitor so that the monitor couldn't be used.
• Disrupted church services from unwanted radio tower music, announcements and commercials.
• Disrupted telephone service, interfering with earning a livelihood.
• Often couldn't pick up Bellingham stations.
• Unwanted radio tower programming all over the AM dial.
• Terrible static on the car radio.
• Interference on the walkie talkie at work.
• Front door bell had to be disconnected as radio station was coming through it.
• A touch lamp would come on during the night disrupting sleep.
• Interference caused a poor signal so that the computer modem was not able to make or maintain a connection, causing a loss of business income.
• Very slow Internet connections.
• Interference when using the phone made conversations difficult.
Is it a fundamental right for Tsawwassen and Point Roberts citizens to be able to enjoy our homes, to be able to use our phones, computers, baby monitors, stereo systems, car radios and be free from constant hums?
U.S. Federal Communications Commission regulations do not apply in Canada. KRPI does not have to resolve all problems and after one year of operation does not have to mitigate any problems. KRPI will be under no legal obligation to fix problems that Tsawwassen residents experience.
Now is the time to donate funds to the Cross Border Coalition to be able to pay our lawyers to successfully defeat the radio towers. Please do your part and help the coalition protect our families' health and our ability to enjoy our homes and earn a living.
