Farmland letters better late than never

Re: Council calling on senior gov't not to remove land, May 9

I must say I was heartened to read that Delta council has called on senior governments not to remove land from the Agricultural Land Reserve.

This is after MLA Vicki Huntington revealed the Emerson Group was secretly optioning Delta ALR properties and how much money was involved in this optioning. The extent of this optioning was surprising and the fact it was being done by stealth was upsetting.

I must say I was quite discouraged after hearing Coun. Robert Campbell's response at a previous council meeting when the optioning of Delta farmland for industrialization was raised by Coun. Sylvia Bishop. He dismissed the subject, saying this revelation was old news and the matter was dropped.

So I was glad to see that mayor and council have finally decided to act on this "old news" by sending letters to the provincial and federal governments calling on them to not remove the land from the ALR. I hope this translates into an open respect and willingness to protect all agriculture land in Delta and other municipalities as well.

In light of Campbell's "old news" comment, I say better late than never.

I hope this shows a stiffening of Delta's backbone and it will also act alongside many other municipalities to put forth a motion to declare a moratorium on smart meters.
