Editor:

Delta’s farming and fishing communities have played a key role in the city’s development and character. Through urbanization, most Delta residents today have little connection with farmers and fishers and may not fully appreciate their important role of providing food security and sustainability.

This past summer, Delta farmers took on a task for which they didn’t seek recognition because they felt it was the right thing to do.

The extraordinary heatwave impacted farmers throughout southern B.C. Not only did the heat, drought and forest fires threaten the production of crops, thousands of heads of cattle had to be moved out of the fire zones. While livestock was saved, the farmers faced an acute shortage of cattle feed.

When Delta farmers heard about the existential threats faced by farmers of the Interior, they pulled resources together. Truck load after truck load of donated hay was transported. This extraordinary grassroots support deserves recognition beyond the farming community. I’m hugely proud of our farmers and all Deltans should be!
