Re: B.C. minister not a minister when at Chinese Communist Party events: Ministry (Optimist online edition)
Kudos to Graeme Wood for his article highlighting the debacle of MLA George Chow, BC Minister of State for Trade, attending a Huawei-sponsored Chinese cultural event and a celebration of Chinese Communist Party.
The event on Oct. 2 in Vancouver came one week after Canadians Spavor and Kovrig were released from arbitrary detention in China.
Even more annoying is the statement from a government official, Chandler Grieve, attempting to put a positive spin on MLA Chow's attendance by saying, “MLA George Chow did not attend the event on behalf of the B.C. government. He attended the event as a Vancouver area MLA and a member of the Chinese-Canadian community.”
That’s nonsense and an insult to our intelligence.
MLA Chow is a Minister in the BC NDP government and as such he and all Ministers represent the government at functions of this type. In addition, if he attended as “MLA and a member of Chinese-Canadian community”, I’m pretty sure many in the Chinese-Canadian community will be outraged to know their MLA attended a Chinese Communist Party related event.
I encourage all Deltans to read Mr. Wood’s article and determine for themselves if MLA Chow should be removed from his Ministry role. I’ve already made up my mind.
