Re: Public to have say on Ladner Village redevelopment plan - 2021 October 28

I've been surprised that there has been no comment on these pages regarding the proposal to build a six-storey mixed-use building at 4989 Bridge Street and 4905 to 4915 Elliot Street.

Ladnerites seem to like the scale of their “village” pretty much as it is.

I looked at the site the other day and trying to imagine a very large six-storey building there was staggering. In terms of the village, I guess it depends partly on what we consider as the village: is it just 48th Ave and Delta St? Be that as it may, the proposed building would loom over everything around it, dwarfing even the highest building next door, the old Municipal Hall.

Along with this is the very disconcerting idea of losing not just the one lumber yard in Ladner, but our only hardware store (after losing our best-in-province Ladner Village Hardware a few years ago). I should add that I am not against all larger buildings in Ladner, and I can support, even encourage, more four-storey, even six-storey rental apartment buildings; and I like the idea of residential atop commercial. But the locations have to be carefully chosen.

I hope many more South Deltans will look closely at this development and voice their opinions to city council directly and at the public consultations.
