Letters: Glad we still have the tunnel

With the extreme winter weather we had in the last few days, seeing that the Alex Fraser was closed for 20 hours and the Port Mann Bridge even longer, it was nice to know that with the tunnel we could still get to places north if we needed too.

Editor:

I am extremely glad that we will be getting a tunnel to replace the existing Massey Tunnel.

With the extreme winter weather we had in the last few days, seeing that the Alex Fraser was closed for 20 hours and the Port Mann Bridge even longer, it was nice to know that with the tunnel we could still get to places north if we needed too.

I can understand that maybe engineers were caught off guard when they designed the Port Mann and by having cables going over the traffic potential accidents could occur, but the Alex Fraser Bridge has been in operation since 1986 and it has only started to be shut down in the years since the Port Mann was built.

Why doesn't the Golden Ears Bridge suffer the same closures? Why is the replacement Pattullo Bridge also going to be cable stayed? Will it too suffer potential closures?

The Alex Fraser, Golden Ears and design pictures for the Pattullo all have cables that are outside the lanes of traffic, but still have the ability to have ice form on them.

Boy am I glad that we have the tunnel and will continue to do so!
