Letters: Make the Bridge Street pop-up park permanent

The pop-up park in Ladner Village is a great idea and a fun, summer experience that should be permanent says this letter writer.

Editor:

What a delight it has been over the last two summers to witness Deltans of all ages enjoying the pop-up parks around our community, particularly the one on Bridge Street.

Set at the heart of Ladner Village, this park provides an obvious gathering place for families with children, creates a landing spot for visitors, and complements the small businesses nearby. Whether intentionally or not, it also keeps vehicle traffic to the Village’s periphery, making the whole area a more enjoyable place to spend time (and money). With all that in mind, I think it is worth asking: why not make it permanent?

Ladner Village is undoubtedly in the midst of a revival, with the exciting changes coming to Chisolm Street and the waterfront. By the looks of the concept sketches, that project will transform and beautify the area, and give us locals another outdoor space of which to be proud.

A permanent Bridge Street Park serves a much more practical purpose. For those traversing the Village, it is a natural rest stop, a place to enjoy lunch, people watch, or have a chat. And importantly for our local businesses, it gets people into the Village core and gives them a reason to linger.

Let’s take advantage of our relatively mild climate and make this wonderful exercise in placemaking permanent.
