Media is no longer a source for reliable information, a truth that invalidates your claim that democracy depends on it

This letter writer takes issue with a recent op-ed published online during National Newspaper Week in Canada.

Editor:

Re: Our job is to report the truth - democracy depends on it (Optimist, online op-ed).

Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr. Cameron, but that ship set sail a long time ago.

In fact, when I was involved in the Delta Port expansion issue over 15 years ago, a reporter from the Vancouver Sun told me there was no such thing as freedom of speech in the media any more. The editor tells you what you’re reporting on, and how to report it.

Media is no longer a source for reliable information, a truth that invalidates your claim that democracy depends on it.

My rule of thumb…..read what both sides of the politicized media outlets are “reporting”, and realize that somewhere in the middle lies the truth. Combine that with your common sense and life experiences.

I’m sure Walter Cronkite is rolling over in his grave regarding today’s style of journalism.
