Letters: Shared trails and free bicycle bells

As the weather warms, we hear more concerns about safety on shared (walking/cycling/equestrian) trails.

The situation worsens as more people now use the trails, and more people have taken up cycling.

This is why our South Delta BC Greens Riding Association has given out hundreds of free bicycle bells at the entrances to the Millennium Trail and the Boundary Bay Trail. The bells help, but it's really just an opportunity to remind cyclists that they need to be considerate, slow down when approaching pedestrians, and give them some notice before passing.

We have never asked for donations, yet some people strolling by see our signs and walk over to offer us cash to support what we're doing. A few people stop to talk and some ask why we are doing it. It's an opportunity for us to explain that two of our party's six principles are non-violence and social justice.

Other BC Green Party associations in Metro Vancouver have now adopted our idea, and in total, we have given out more than 500 bells. We plan to start up again soon, and anyone interested in participating in the project can contact us at dls@bcgreens.ca.
