Letters: Since when is three percent a majority?

If we truly wanted to see levels of support or opposition, a broader, random sampling of residents would be warranted.

The application would see a new mixed-use development comprising a six-storey courtyard-style building with 13,756 square-feet of pedestrian-oriented commercial space on the ground level, 218 parking spaces accessed from a lane on the first and second levels as well as 129 residential dwelling units on the upper four levels.

Editor:

I could only chuckle while reading Doug Reynolds letter regarding Delta council and the redevelopment proposal for the Dunbar Lumber site in the Dec. 8 letters section.

Reynolds suggested that he had checked with the Delta City Clerk regarding feedback from residents and that “the exact numbers were: 684 in opposition and ONLY [emphasis added] 80 in favour.” He later writes that he hoped that our new council would “listen to the overwhelming majority of Ladner residents who spoke and wrote against” the proposal.

According to information found on Wikipedia purportedly sourced from Stats Canada, the 2016 census showed Ladner having a population of 22,193. Since when does approximately three represent a majority let alone one of overwhelming fashion?

As I think most are aware, feedback on any proposal in South Delta tends to be over-represented by detractors and naysayers. If we truly wanted to see levels of support or opposition, a broader, random sampling of residents would be warranted.
