Letters: Unsupervised children causing damage in Beach Grove Park

It is just as important that children as well as dogs be supervised in this park, by school staff during school hours, and by parents in other times.

I suggest that it is timely that Beach Grove Elementary remind students and their parents that trees in a park are protected.

Editor:

On a recent Monday I was just walking in Beach Grove Park at approximately 3:40 p.m. when I was alerted both visually and by screaming to a group of approximately 10 unsupervised children, estimated age 9 to 11 years, who were carrying and waving pieces of old tree limbs.

They were hitting these limbs against trees and bushes. One boy was pounding on one of the pages of the current Story Walk.

I asked him to stop banging the page as it would damage it. He did stop.

The Story Walk is enjoyed by children and adults alike.

It is just as important that children as well as dogs be supervised in this park, by school staff during school hours, and by parents in other times.

I suggest that it is timely that Beach Grove Elementary remind students and their parents that trees in a park are protected. They are not playing in a forest! As well they obviously need a reminder not to do damage to the Story Walk.

This is a heavily treed park and is continually receiving new trees. Some new trees were planted there just last week by Delta staff. I did not see the children hitting newly planted trees but they were hitting older trees and shrubs which also need to be maintained.

I also suggest that the school needs to complete the fencing of its grounds for safety of children who are often in the treed park out of sight of staff during breaks in school hours.
