Letters: Why is the word “God” still part of our national anthem?

I know there are much bigger issues to worry about these days, but I can’t help but wonder why the word “God” is still part of our national anthem.

I recently watched a Canucks game on TV.

I know there are much bigger issues to worry about these days, but I can’t help but wonder why the word “God” is still part of our national anthem.

In recent years the wording of the anthem has not been set in stone and has evolved. For example, “in all our sons” changed to “in all of us.” It’s a reasonable change.

A 2019 nationwide poll showed 61 per cent of Canadians believed in evolution, 23 per cent believed God created Human Beings, the balance were undecided. It’s obvious that including God in the national anthem is an anachronism at best, and likely objectionable to the majority of Canadians. The court system no longer requires someone testifying to swear on a bible.

Eliminating the word “God” from the anthem would be simple and barely noticeable.

Let’s continue to evolve and change the wording of the anthem to reflect the values of today’s Canada.
