Re: Put to the smell test, Murphy’s Law, Sept. 13

As a Ladner household which values and regularly uses the Enviro-Smart facilities to deposit our yard waste, and on occasion has also experienced the site’s unfortunate odours, it’s mystifying as to why for years the smell has not been fully resolved.

With the latest revelations of a 2013 memo between Delta’s former CAO and Metro Vancouver, will we ever really know who is at fault for this long-standing unresolved issue?

One only has to look at Metro Vancouver’s website to see this contentious issue goes back as far as 2008. Minutes from a Metro Vancouver environment committee meeting in May of that year advise of why a pollution abatement order was not issued to the company. Approximately 90 complaint letters had been received about foul odours.

Because this site is on ALR land and also operates as a turf farm, in addition to its composting of green waste, there are a multitude of confusing and overlapping regulations and government reps (and egos) involved. It’s no wonder complaints by residents appear to get lost in this bureaucratic maze.

Hopefully the public information meeting being held Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Harris Barn will clarify and result in solutions to show how residents, Enviro-Smart and government can together come up with acceptable actions because composting is so necessary for our community’s environment and for our valued agriculture.
