Do not open the Point Roberts border

I understand that the Governor of Washington State has asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier John Horgan to open the border for Point Roberts so that their residents can access the Washington State mainland.

Whilst I have sympathy for Point Roberts’ residents, there is no way that this border should be opened.

Many Tsawwassen residents like us are following all provincial guidelines, social distancing, wearing masks, limiting outside contacts, staying away from large groups, store shopping as little as possible.

Opening the Point Roberts border puts all of us at risk.

If U.S. residents are allowed into Canada, who will ensure they don’t go to our stores, restaurants, use our community facilities? So they go to Blaine, Bellingham, etc. get infected and then bring that back and infect Tsawwassen residents.

We have made the sacrifices. It is unacceptable that we are now put at risk.

Horgan chose to close off Haida Gwaii. We are no different.

The Washington State Governor has other choices.

Tsawwassen residents must not become the scapegoats.

I look forward to hearing that the request is denied and the Point Roberts Border remains closed.
