Leave the hospice alone

For the past 30 years, the Delta Hospice Society has been a jewel in the crown of South Delta. Their palliative care mandate, to take care of the dying (help them live as fully as possible) and their families, with love and commitment, is something we all took pride in.

The NDP provincial government has torn this community apart. We are now in the middle of a civil war. Neighbor against neighbor, a court case in the highest Court of BC, and a national interest group - Dying with Dignity Canada - weighing in to manipulate and fight to further their cause on our soil. It breaks my heart.

All of this can be put squarely on the shoulders of the provincial NDP government. This drama was all completely unnecessary. There are many places for having MAiD here and there is an opportunity for everyone to get the kind of service they want at the end of life. We are an extremely fortunate community in that regard. In no other province has the government insisted, coerced, and forced palliative care facilities to adopt MAiD - only in B.C. In the last few years, they got most Hospices to acquiesce and follow their commands - but not the little Delta Hospice Society, they are like tigers refusing the push of totalitarianism. Perhaps that is something we should be proud of? No other part of B.C. has the powers that be met with such resistance.

If there is any justice at all the NDP will not be re-elected to govern this province. At this point, we need to start to heal our community. Leave the Hospice alone to do the excellent work they have always done and let us look at our neighbors as friends again.
