Both your paper and my office have been receiving complaints regarding the condition of the George Massey Tunnel.

Last week, the regional director of highways kindly returned my call regarding the concern we all share about the present state of the tunnel and the impact it has on a growing lack of confidence when driving through it. I am pleased to say that, four days later, I received the following message: "... you should notice a visible improvement in the lighting starting tomorrow [i.e., Thursday]. We have adjusted the lighting levels during the day to improve the brightness in the tunnel over previous levels. We are also working on replacing any lighting that is not working and this should be complete within the next 2-4 weeks. I am still awaiting a firm schedule for the washing. Generally, we try to do this in the spring ... [but] If temperatures warm substantially without the risk of freezing, I will see if we can step up the schedule...."

I was also advised the ministry is committed to maintaining the tunnel while the bridge replacement project moves forward. We will obviously just have to keep reminding them... Hopefully this will somewhat brighten your next trip through the tunnel and I thank the regional director for his rapid response to our growing displeasure.
