Re: Give the Gift of Local News, Dec. 5

Thank you to Matt Blair for taking the time to write such a thoughtful piece. I did just that and I am now a proud subscriber to the best dang newspaper on the planet, the Delta Optimist. Each and every Thursday, I am delighted to find it tucked neatly underneath my front door mat.

As I sit on BC Ferries on my way to pick up my precious four-year-old granddaughter for a visit, I am reminded of a Delta Optimist carrier story featuring myself and my then 13-year-old son who had a rather large route in Marina Garden Estates.

He was not always able to fully commit to deliveries, but did the job always get done that day, regardless of hour? Absolutely. After dropping the boys off at their early morning hockey practices, mom (me) would take care of his route.

I remember being startled by a woman early one morning asking with great hope as to whether I was the new Delta Optimist delivery girl? In an exasperated tone, she carried on, “It’s so nice to receive my Delta Optimist first thing in the morning. That young man, although friendly, has been delivering my paper late every single week and he leaves rollerblade tracks on my front lawn.”

To which I responded, “I’m sorry ma’am, I’m just covering for him, but I’ll be sure to pass on the sentiments. Have a lovely day.”

Thanks for the memories, Delta Optimist.
