Rants are unproductive

Bob Orrick’s letter (Optimist, Aug. 9) about “fifth columns,” a wide wound in the country,” “a horde of activists, idealists and extremists,” and “negative people posing as Canadians” is difficult to comprehend due to the scatter-gun spread of insults and complaints lacking specific information about what has upset him.

Who exactly are those activists, idealists, extremists and negative people, and what, precisely, have they done?

It would be much better if Mr. Orrick were to use your pages to respectfully discuss whatever social or other problems he has identified so that we can all benefit from free and open exchanges of ideas on important issues and problems that affect us all.

Rants do not achieve that.
