The following letter was sent to South Delta NDP candidate Bruce Reid and copied to the Delta Optimist.
I have lived in Ladner since 1980. I am concerned that your party will continue to drag its feet on moving forward with the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.
We almost had a bridge and I cannot help thinking the only reason it was cancelled is that it was a Liberal inspired project.
I also believe this is the only reason you are not moving ahead with this. I am a professional fish biologist and have worked on many bridge projects. I can tell you that the environmental impacts of a bridge would be minimal as both footings are outside the river channel.
The air quality impacts of thousands of cars idling is also a concern.
I was a Liberal supporter, but am willing to consider voting NDP if there is a commitment to moving ahead with this project.
A tunnel as a replacement is ludicrous and a deep bore tunnel would be unnecessarily costly.
Also, if the plan is to excavate down through the river bed for a tunnel, it would have untold environmental impacts, not to mention looking like a war zone.
I cannot but think that since South Delta is a Liberal riding the citizens of this area are being punished for not supporting your party.
Please act as our NDP representative and do the right thing for your constituents.
