Last week the City of Delta decided to cancel most parks and recreation activities, but not to cancel the public information meeting regarding the proposal to construct townhouses on the golf course property along 16th Avenue.

I decided not to attend the meeting in light of concurrent warnings on TV not to attend such gatherings. In a subsequent phone call the planning department informed me that the city considered the public risk to be acceptable on Wednesday evening, but not to be acceptable the next day.

This was convenient for the proponent, but not for the public (and particularly for older persons who are both a large component of Tsawwassen’s demography and more susceptible to the coronavirus).

I suspect that Delta’s decision to hold the information meeting when it did had the effect of discouraging public participation. (To mitigate, the planning department has placed project information online and will accept comments up to its original comment deadline.)

Notwithstanding, I infer the planning department prioritized the interests of its client above those of the residents of South Delta.
