We’re not taking threat of angry forces seriously

My heart sank after hearing Judge Brett Kavanaugh was approved to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. The far right in the U.S. is now in control of Congress, the Senate, the White House and the Supreme Court. The old Republican Party has been taken hostage.

If we don’t believe the tribalist movement in the U.S. is influencing Canadians and other Western nations, then we are fools. The recent elections in Ontario and Quebec are a testament to this. Conrad Peach, a neo-Nazi, is running for city council in Nanaimo.

We are at a crucial turning point in history and I worry that we are not taking this seriously. Dictators come to power using the tactics of fear-mongering against certain populations, taking control of the media, police, military and intel forces; spreading false propaganda and emboldening the anger in those who feel left out. Sound familiar?

The way to counter this movement is to get out and vote on Oct. 20. I am voting for new leadership in Delta and some fresh faces on council.

Following our city elections, another critical mail-in vote is to say “yes” to proportional representation for B.C. The most stable governments in the world use this system. At least give it a chance. After three years if you don’t like, you can vote it out.

The time is now to make your voice heard and your votes count.
