On Aug. 31, B.C. Hydro Regeneration alerted local residents through this paper that B.C. Hydro would replace our current electricity meters with new smart meters.

This meter is so smart it will be able to tell everyone who wishes to know when you or I are at home, when we are away and for how long, at what time of day we do our cooking or laundry, etc. We are told this new gadget will create immediate savings for us. Really?

On July 28, a release from the Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner in Victoria stated that, following many complaints, an investigation was being launched as to whether these meters are an invasion of one's privacy. Should not this whole thing, therefore, be put on hold until we get the results of this investigation?

Our MLA recently wrote a column on this subject.

One of her comments was that a resident should have a choice as to whether a smart meter is installed. I agree.

In the meantime, perhaps anyone concerned could install a notice on their current meter asking B.C.

Hydro to not install a new one, or better still, make contact with Victoria and B.C. Hydro.

Time is running out on this issue.
