Here we are a full week into the new school year - a school year unlike any other with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many parents are concerned what this school year will look like. There is a lot of uncertainty and anxiety. There are many changes inside and outside of the classroom with likely more changes to come.

But one thing that has not changed is you cannot speed through a school zone.

Sadly, it would appear many have forgotten how to drive through school zones as evident by the complete disregard of traffic laws in the past week.

Last Thursday, the Delta police traffic unit was out in force to remind driver’s that school is in session and more and more children will be crossing the street. That means 30 km/hr zones are in effect.

Here are some of the highlights or lowlights as it were in this case, provided by DPD: in just one day of enforcement, officers handed out 35 violation tickets, ticketed a driver for being impaired by drugs while driving and also ticketed said driver for speeding.

In another case, an officer had just pulled up in a school zone and spotted a speeding driver in his rear view mirror. He didn’t even have a chance to get out his laser gun before he had to leap out to slow down the driver who was simply going way too fast. In another case, one officer had to stop writing a violation ticket in order to wave and slow down other drivers who persisted in speeding through the school zone.

Officers also gave dozens upon dozens of verbal warnings.

If a child was hit by a vehicle travelling at the speed that those were ticketed for, that child would be dead. Is this how we want to possibly start a new school year, with a tragedy that can be avoided?

Please slow down and avoid an unnecessary tragedy.
