Good points made by the writer but the same applies to pedestrians; they too must be as aware at crossings and that awareness must extend to actually obeying the pedestrian signals.
Too often, whether I am walking, cycling or driving, I see pedestrians entering crosswalks after the “countdown" has begun or when the white walk signal has changed to red.
This is not only illegal, it is dangerous.
