Smart meters are a safe and cost-effective way to modernize the electricity system for the benefit of all British Columbians.

Upgrading to smart meters will help keep rates low by creating a more efficient power system and reducing power loss.

Other benefits include quicker outage detection and power restoration, and allowing customers to track their own near realtime consumption so they can find ways to conserve energy and lower their bills even further.

B.C. Hydro takes the responsibility to protect customers' privacy and security very seriously. We have collected electricity consumption information for 50 years through a safe, secure and regulated process and will continue to do so.

Smart meters collect only hourly consumption information and cannot detect what appliances you are using or when you are using them.

Also, B.C. Hydro will not sell or disclose personal information to third parties. The information collected will be handled in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

We have been working collaboratively with the B.C. Privacy Commissioner's Office to ensure privacy is built into the smart grid system and welcome the office's review of the program.
