Slightly North of Zero: A traveller in my own space

My husband I have travelled to a lot of places in the last five years. Some would say we are in a travelling frenzy. On one occasion we were away for 10 months. Other trips have been weeks or months long.

My husband I have travelled to a lot of places in the last five years. Some would say we are in a travelling frenzy. On one occasion we were away for 10 months. Other trips have been weeks or months long.

The places themselves have ranged from spectacular (The sunny Galapagos Islands) to demanding (Stormy Kingston, South Australia), but for us, it is all about the people we meet along the way.

Those personal connections keep us wanting more. The way you travel determines your ability to make connections. If you change your location every night, it is difficult to experience the culture and connect with the locals. We subscribe to the “slow” traveller mantra, so we have the luxury of both.

We have kept a blog of our travel adventures for many reasons. My husband wants it as a reminder for us. I view it as a way of keeping in touch with our family and friends, as well as information for other would-be travellers. I have learned a lot during the research phases of our trips by reading other peoples’ blogs. This is my way of paying it forward.

The idea of blogging at home never occurred to me. One reason is that blogging is very time-consuming. Even while we are travelling, we have to schedule time to work on our blog. It usually coincides with laundry day, or in locations where there is Internet access.

Secondly, when we are at home, we are working. Where’s the fun in that? The days blend into one another as we fall into a mindless routine of sleep, eat, work… When I saw this opportunity to blog about daily life in South Delta, I was intrigued.

No matter where we have been or how long we’ve been away, I love coming home. There is comfort in the familiarity of this place. Since we are in town for most of the summer, and I am on a school break, this is a perfect opportunity for me to be a traveller in my own space. I shall lift my face to the sun and absorb the sights and sounds around me. I hope you will join me on this unusual adventure.
