An armoured police vehicle was spotted in Sapperton Monday afternoon.

A tank-like vehicle rolled in to Sapperton Monday afternoon after police received reports of a man with a firearm.

Tri-City News reporter Diane Strandberg was in the area around 1 p.m. when she spotted the large, armoured vehicle travelling down East Columbia Street before stopping near Sherbrooke Street.

The vehicle was one of the Emergency Response Team, a group of highly-trained police officers who respond to high-risk situations. ERT officers were to the area after New Westminster Police received reports that a man had returned to his home carrying a firearm, according to Sgt. Jeff Scott.

“Taking every precaution, we deployed members of the Emergency Response Team. Thankfully, this situation has been safely resolved with two adult males taken into custody without any incident,” he wrote in an email to the Record.

The two men remain in custody while police continue their investigation to “determine if there was, in fact, a firearm, and if it was safely or unsafely stored, or prohibited,” according to Scott.
