Editor: It's time for a George Massey Tunnel reality check. The recent announcement on replacing the tunnel is nothing more than a public relations gesture. Talk is cheap. An actual tunnel replacement - not so much.

After an 11-year absence, it is nice to be back at the Delta Optimist. Since I left at the end of August 2001, I spent nine years with the Business in Vancouver Media Group and almost two years pleasantly retired.

Editor: Before our government spends billions of dollars replacing the George Massey Tunnel, perhaps it should consider extending the Canada Line across the Fraser River into Delta and out to the ferry terminal.

Every action has a reaction, particularly when it comes to traffic.

Editor: It's been three-and-a-half years. The Tsawwassen First Nation ratified its treaty, exited Delta, hired talent and set about creating wealth by leasing land for development.

Editor: Getting a driver's licence has become much more difficult in recent years, a long and costly process for young people and their parents. These welcomed changes were inspired by the rate of teenage accidents.

Having grown up in Ladner, it's a pleasure to reach back into the past and explore its relevance with today's vastly different lifestyle. Many books and articles have been written about brothers W.H. and T.E. Ladner.

The more I think about Premier Christy Clark's announcement to replace the George Massey Tunnel, the more it shapes up as one of those be-careful-what-you-wish-for situations.

Editor: I wonder how many people have noticed how many of the glass walls surrounding bus stops have been vandalized recently. The one at 12th Avenue and 53A Street in Tsawwassen has been smashed at least twice in the last two months.
