The developer behind the current high-rise proposal in North Delta is trying to gather support ahead of next Tuesday’s public hearing on the application.

Hari Homes has started a petition on Change.org titled “Build Housing Solutions For Delta Families” for the project at Scott Road at 75A Avenue.

Several hundred have already signed.

“Delta families deserve a chance to be able to live, work and raise their families, and retire without having to consider moving away because of a lack of affordable housing solutions. With housing affordability decreasing, while our population continues to grow, we need to build more housing that works for everyone. That means building neighborhoods that are accessible to transit and major routes, friendly for families, and above all – AFFORDABLE,” the petition states.

The controversial Eminence project by Hari Homes Inc. and Arzone Real Estate Investments Ltd. originally proposed a 35-storey high-rise with 280 units, as well as 14 townhouse on site.

A revised proposal this year now includes a home ownership program for a portion of the development for first-time buyers, in conjunction with B.C. Housing, while increasing the number of high-rise units to 329 and reducing the number of townhomes to six.

Earlier this month, in front of more than 200 residents and on-lookers, both for and against, at the Kennedy Senior’s Centre, Delta council voted 4-3 in favour of sending the proposal to a public hearing.

Councillors Dylan Kruger, Alicia Guichon, Bruce McDonald and Mayor George Harvie voted in favour while Dan Copeland, Lois Jackson and Jeannie Kanakos voted against.

A large crowd is expected at the public hearing which takes place Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the North Delta Recreation Centre gymnasium.

The session starts at 4 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. recess, resuming at 7 p.m.
