Richmond hosts open houses on new housing regulations

The discussions will be based around the impacts of Bill 44 & Bill 47 on Richmond residents
The City of Richmond is holding information sessions about new zoning rules in single-family neighbourhoods.

The City of Richmond will host a total of four open houses this month to let residents learn about new zoning rules that will allow densification in single-family neighbourhoods. 

The city stated they hope the sessions will answer key questions around the new rules.

“It is important for residents to be aware of Bill 44 and Bill 47 and their impacts on the growth and character of Richmond and historic neighbourhoods such as Steveston,” reads the release.

Last November, the provincial government introduced these pieces of legislation with the purpose of increasing supply amid the housing crisis in cities like Richmond. 

On June 23, Richmond council approved rezoning for around 25,000 single-family and duplex lots to permit small-scale multi-unit housing, as well as adopting a bylaw to identify transit-oriented areas and amend residential parking requirements. 

These single-family lots will be allowed to be stratified into three or four units, depending on the size of the lot, with some even allowing six stratified units.

The schedule of the open houses is as follows:

Tuesday, July 9, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Steveston Community Centre, 4111 Moncton St.

Wednesday, July 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hamilton Community Centre, 5140 Smith Dr.

Thursday, July 11, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at South Arm Community Centre, 8880 Williams Rd.

Wednesday, July 17, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Ave.
