When Jason Chan dropped his wallet during a bike ride near Cambie and No. 5 roads last month, he had, understandably, given it up as lost.

He’d gone through the hassle of cancelling most of his bank and credit cards and was in the process of getting a new driver’s licence.

So imagine his surprise when, exactly a month to the day he lost it, an unexpected package came through the mail on Tuesday, with a Scarborough, Ont. postmark.

The padded envelope contained his wallet, complete with every single bank card and his driver’s licence.

“I didn’t remember ordering anything,” said Chan, who works as an accountant in Downtown Vancouver.

“I was so surprised. Thanks so much to whomever did this. It’s a small thing, but it’s so helpful.

“It had a note attached to it from Canada Post saying that it is from the undeliverable mail office and they used the address found in the driver's license to mail it back to me.”

Someone must have found it and dropped it into a street mailbox, assumed Chan.

“My wallet then travelled across the country to Ontario and back to Richmond. All the contents in my wallet remain intact,” added Chan, noting that he doesn’t carry cash.

It appears that any undeliverable mail, which has value, goes automatically to Canada Post’s Scarborough office to be assessed.

“I want to thank the stranger who put my wallet into the street mailbox and to the people who work at Canada Post. This has strengthened my faith in humanity and my community,” said Chan.
