Three years after launching the North Delta Seniors Bus program, a similar initiative is coming to South Delta.

Delta council approved a one-year lease on a wheelchair accessible bus for the program Monday night.

On the heels of the success of the North Delta program, there was always a commitment to expand it to South Delta, said Coun. Sylvia Bishop.

"Accessible and affordable transportation is an ongoing issue for seniors," states a staff report presented to civic politicians. "With an aging population in Delta, this had accelerated the demand for inexpensive transportation options for seniors." Service will be provided to individuals that require transportation that is otherwise not readily available.

The route will be determined by riders and will focus on medical appointments, shopping and social engagements.

Civic politicians approved a one-year lease for a para-transit bus, with an option to purchase at the end of the lease.

The 2016 financial plan includes $120,000 for the South Delta program. Delta has secured a $20,000 Age-Friendly Community Planning and Projects grant from the province to help initiate the program.

The program will be managed out of McKee Seniors Recreation Centre "as soon as we can get this up and running," Bishop said.
