Teams from both sides of the border will converge on the Ladner Leisure Centre and South Delta Recreation Centre over the Remembrance Day weekend for South Delta Minor Hockey Association’s 26th annual Tim Jardine Bantam Midget Showcase.

The 16-team tournament features eight teams battling in the two divisions — looking to reach Monday’s championship games.

Organizers have once again done an impressive job of attracting out-of-town teams.

The host A1 Storm are joined in the Bantam Division by West Kootenay, North Zone Selects, Campbell River, Thompson Blazers, Wenatchee Wolves, Surrey Thunder and the Vancouver Thunderbirds.

The Midget Division features Wentachee, North Zone, Fernie Academy, Northeast Trackers, Central Zone Rockets, North Shore Winter Club, Ridge Meadows Rustlers and the A1 Storm.

Both local teams take momentum into the Showcase.

The Bantam A1 Storm, coached by Brent Wheatley, went 6-1-1 in placement play to earn a spot in Flight One of Pacific Coast Amateur regular season play. Meanwhile, Ken Priestlay’s Midget A1 squad had the top record in Flight Two play with a 7-1-0 record.

The tournament format will see each team play three round-robin games, starting on Friday morning, to determine Sunday’s quarter-final match-ups. The semi-finals will take place later that night. The Showcase concludes on Remembrance Day with the championship games slated for 1:30 p.m. (Bantam) and 4 p.m. (Midget) at the LLC.

The Storm will be looking for their first Bantam Division title since 2006. That team was considered one of the best to ever come through South Delta Minor and featured current Montreal Canadiens star Brendan Gallagher.

The Midget Division was added to the tournament in 2016.
