Greater Vancouver Canadians head to this weekend’s B.C. Major Midget Hockey League’ Showcase Weekend in Abbotsford riding a three-game win streak.
The Canadians made it three wins in four starts out of the gate by sweeping a two-game series from the North Island Silvertips on the weekend in Nanaimo.
Elliot Marshall earned the shutout in Sunday’s 4-0 victory while Joshua Harrison paced the attack with a pair of goals. Sammy May and Trevor Wong also scored.
The series opener saw the Canadians explode for three goals in as many minutes in the second period en route to a 5-2 triumph. Gabriel Parent, Lukus Olson, Nathan Racey, Hayden Tuba and captain Garrett Wicks looked after the scoring.
Greater Vancouver opened its season a weekend earlier by earning a split with the Okanagan Rockets. Following a 7-0 drubbing in the opener, the team bounced back with an 8-4 triumph to earn a split — led by a hat trick from May. The 15-year-old Richmond native was coming off a solid training camp with the Saskatoon Blades that earned him standard player agreement. He was selected by the club in last spring’s WHL Bantam Draft.
Parent scored twice while Wong and Wicks each had a goal and two assists.
Wong was selected 18th overall by the Kelowna Rockets in the Bantam Draft after a big season with St. George’s Bantam Varsity team in the Canadian School Sports Hockey League that saw him produce 141 points in 30 games. The 15-year-old has already made a verbal commitment to the University of Denver.
The Canadians now heads to Abbotsford Centre for a pair of games against the 1-3-0 Thompson Blazers starting on Sunday afternoon. The teams will also meet again on Monday.
Meanwhile a new era officially begins Friday at the Richmond Olympic Oval as the Canadians Minor Midget team opens its regular season against the Valley West Giants at 6:30 p.m. The teams also play on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The B.C. Minor Major League is exclusively for 15-year-olds to help ease the transition into the three-year age division (15-to-17-year-olds) and develop with athletes of the same age.
